  17. <p>     There's something fishy about the U.S. seafood industry,
  18. according to a new study that will appear in the February issue
  19. of Consumer Reports magazine. The study, carried out by
  20. investigative reporter Trudy Lieberman, found widespread
  21. contamination and mislabeling of seafood in retail fish shops
  22. and supermarkets in New York City and Chicago. Of the 113 random
  23. samples of fish purchased in both cities, 29% were spoiled and
  24. 44% were contaminated with fecal bacteria; 40% of the swordfish
  25. samples had an impermissible level of mercury.

  27. <p>     The report gives ammunition to consumer advocates who
  28. argue for mandatory seafood inspection. At present, the handling
  29. of fish--as opposed to poultry and meat--is largely
  30. unregulated by the Federal Government. "The study is highly
  31. disturbing, because it further proves that contaminated seafood
  32. is readily making its way to consumers' plates," says Jodie
  33. Silverman of Public Voice for Food and Health Policy. But the
  34. U.S. Food and Drug Administration disputed Consumer Reports'
  35. findings, arguing that the sample is too small to be
  36. significant.
